Passerby puts out Virginia Beach Hotel Fire
09/09/2009
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Fire officials credit a fast acting citizen with putting out a Virginia Beach hotel fire Tuesday night. The West Virginia man quickly put out the flames with a nearby fire extinguisher.

According to a Virginia Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief, Richard Beverage and his family were walking along the boardwalk around 10:30 p.m., when Beverage spotted the fire in a first floor room at the Breakers Inn Resort. Beverage ran to the hotel lobby to grab an extinguisher, the battalion chief said, then climbed the balcony to put out most of the fire before fire crews arrived.

Forty-four people were inside the building at the time, but none were injured. The building was not evacuated.

The fire was contained to the room where it started, the chief said, and the fire was ruled accidental because of an air conditioner that overheated.

The faulty A/C unit could be seen discarded on the hotel lawn. It's unclear if anyone was renting the room at the time the fire started
